Coventry University (COVUNI)
Coventry University (founded in 1987) is a forward-looking, modern University with a proud tradition as a provider of high quality education and multidisciplinary research. It has an established presence regionally, nationally and internationally with over 18,000 students on campus and 2,000 staff. The University occupies a purpose-built 33-acre campus in the heart of Coventry city centre and a 20-acre Technology Park, providing support services and dedicated accommodation for start-up companies.
Coventry is now the highest ranked modern university in all of the major league tables of UK higher education institutions. The university was awarded the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide’s “Modern University of the Year” accolade for two years running in 2014 and 2015, as well as being the highest ranked modern university in the guide’s history. Coventry is also the top performing modern university in the National Student Survey 2014 and the Complete University Guide 2016.
Over the last decade it has steadily climbed the national rankings and also entered the world rankings. The rise in the league tables has been built on teaching excellence, alongside a focus on applied research, which has seen Coventry recognised as one of the leading business-facing modern universities with large national and international networks.
The University is one of only 23 institutions in the UK that receives the maximum funding in recognition of its R&D work with external organisations. The University’s use of Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) supports one of the largest and most successful University-Business partnership units in the UK (involving 9,000+ SMEs and 500+ larger enterprises nationally and internationally). Additionally, there is full support for the identification and retention of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) from our research.
Coventry has recently launched a new University-wide research strategy – ‘Excellence with Impact’ – with the aim of continuing to develop its reputation as a successful modern research University. The aim is improve our national and world rankings and break into the world’s top 100 universities under 50 years old. In order to achieve this, the University plan is to build on our current research capabilities and invest in those areas in which Coventry can be truly world-leading. A £100 million pound investment over the next 5 years will enhance and strengthen the existing research profile by creating a number of new University and Faculty Research Centres that are integral to the vision for the University and which represent key research areas in which the University can become globally renowned for excellence.
The host department for this project is the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences in Coventry University. The Faculty is one of the largest Faculties in the University with over 300 academic staff teaching some 5,000 students at undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research degree levels. Coventry University has been developing and delivering health and social care training in the UK for over 40 years. Our provision includes Foundation, Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral programmes and an extensive range of continuing professional development modules and courses.
